long running jobs crashing the box

Ive a got an sql server that crashes whenever a job runs for a minimum of
5 - 10 minutes. It doesnt happen 100% of the time, probably 80-90%. It
doesnt matter if the job is scheduled, run manually, a backup, a reindex, a
data transfer, whatever, if it runs between 5 and 10 minutes, the box
crashes. Of course it happens most frquently during backups as they are run
the most. All ideas are appreicated.

Does SQL Server stop running, but the O/S is okay?
What version of O/S, what version of SQL Server? What service packs have
you installed.
What are you using for backups? Is it a standard SQL Server backup or are
you using some other program?

Do you have anything else running on that server besides SQL 2k? (Exchange
maybe?).
Have you tried setting a max server memory for SQL Server? Tune it down a
bit and ensure that you leave enough RAM for the O/S.
(EM-> right-click on Server, Properties)

I just changed the memory so we'll see if that fixes anything.

Ive always dropped/ recreated the SQL Users after restoring a backup from
prodiuction to dev in order to make the Users usable after this scenario
occurs. Is there a better way?

Is it possible to backup (and restore) logins (no database users)? I've this doubt because if I backup a db (Db1) from SQLserver1 and then I restore it in other server (SQLserver2) without all logins than SQLserver1, results in a problem with user access
to database.

I've got the following: SQL Server 2005 Express & SQL Server 2000
The sql server 2000 has got a database with some tables, which I want to
show as view (readonly) in the sql server 2005 express.
Now I did the following:
I added a linked server to the sql 2005
I've choosen the security option: "Be made using this security context" with
the sql user and sql password of the SQL Server 2000
But when I try to select data from the server (SELECT * FROM
Server.Database.dbo.Table), I get the following error:
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "192.168.80.5" returned message
"Login timeout expired".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "192.168.80.5" returned message
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When
connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that
under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.".
Msg 126, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
VIA Provider: The specified module could not be found.
