long running RESTORE

Hi all !
I have 5 GB backup file of DB running in SIMPLE recovery mode on SQL
2000(SP3). It takes a few minutes to restore it on another box which has
enough resurses, but when I tried to do the same on a box that is a bit old
and not so powerfull I just couldn't wait until it's done, - i canceled
restore operation. As a workaround I detached DB file and then attached them
on that box. But I'm still wondering is there another way to restore DB, may
be group by group or ...?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Alex
Backup and restore
and
sp_detach_db and sp_attach_db
are the best options
You could also try using DTS, but that would probably involve much more
effort on your part.

|||Did you restore the database on the 'old box' when the database was not yet
created? If this was the first time, the 5 Gig file needs to be created
first before the restore can start, and depending on the speed of your disk
controllers, this might take some time. When you subsequently restore the
database again, don't delete the old database first.
Since you already have the database on the old box, try restoring using the
normal way, and see if it still takes as long. And by any chance, are you
using compressed folders?

|||Yes, I created DB before restoring with two file groups 2 G each and log
file. And I wasn't using compressed folder. My guess is maybe I wasn't
patient enough although I waited for about half an hour to let it finish.
But that 'old box' is really slow and that could be the case. I'll give it
another try and be more patien this time.
Thank you,

long running jobs crashing the box

Ive a got an sql server that crashes whenever a job runs for a minimum of
5 - 10 minutes. It doesnt happen 100% of the time, probably 80-90%. It
doesnt matter if the job is scheduled, run manually, a backup, a reindex, a
data transfer, whatever, if it runs between 5 and 10 minutes, the box
crashes. Of course it happens most frquently during backups as they are run
the most. All ideas are appreicated.

What do you mean by crashes? Does the O/S die and you get a blue screen?
Does SQL Server stop running, but the O/S is okay?
What version of O/S, what version of SQL Server? What service packs have
you installed.
What are you using for backups? Is it a standard SQL Server backup or are
you using some other program?
More information would be helpful.

Do you have anything else running on that server besides SQL 2k? (Exchange

Have you tried setting a max server memory for SQL Server? Tune it down a
bit and ensure that you leave enough RAM for the O/S.

LogReader unable to connect to the publisher

I have a SQL2K box acting as Distributor and SQL7 box as a publisher. The
LogReader on the Distributor is unable to connect to the Publisher. I get the
following Msg from the Log Reader:
The process could not execute 'sp_MSadd_repl_commands27hp' on
'SQL2KServerName\InstanceName'
The two servers are on different untrusted domains. I am however able to
connect both ways through QA.
SQL2K box has SP4 and SQL7 box has SP3. Don't want to go to SP4 on SQL7
unless necessary and because it is a production server.
can you uncheck the Administrative Link Password requirement. Connect to
your distributor in EM, select Tools, Replication, Configure Distributor,
Publishers and Subscribers, and click on the Publishers tab. On the problem
publisher click on the browse button to the right of the publisher and you
will find this option at the bottom of the dialog box.

|||Thank you Hiary for the response. It turned out that the Distributor was
unable to resolve Publisher's IP address by name. Somehow, replacing the IP
address in the parameters for the log reader didn't work either. However,
after modifying the host file (for IP to name lookup) for distributor
resolved the problem.

Login To SQL Server Db

HI
I am using CR 8 with vb6 and sql server 2000
I am designing my reports in RDC integrated into VB IDE. I set the Login info in the dialog box which appear to add database, e.g Server = (Local),User ID=sa etc, and this is being done at design time.

My question is that as my app is going to be multiuser, so will it cause any problem on clients machine?

Should I give the login information to RDC at run time and How?

Also can I use the same connection for RDC which is being used by app to connect with the DB on SQL Server?

Waiting for help...I have the same problem. I would like to enter the logon information to the database at runtime. As of now, I`ve no clue as to how to go about.|||Any one to Help...|||ok. I found a solution. Not exactly me but Robdog. I was just pointed to his code :
